Capacitybuilders board members appointed
Phil Hope, Minister for the Third Sector, has today appointed five new members to the board of Capacitybuilders and reappointed the existing Chair and four of the existing members. The new board brings together knowledge of the third sector, an understanding of social enterprise and private sector and grant-making expertise.
Phil Hope, Minister for the Third Sector, said:
“I am pleased to welcome Sir Rodney Brooke, Stephen Dunmore, Anthony Freeling, Olu Olasode and Angela Sarkis to the Capacitybuilders Board. The impressive depth and range of their experience will complement the expertise and skills of the existing members. I believe it will also enable Capacitybuilders to develop and enhance its vital role in strengthening third sector support providers.”
Chris Pond, who was reappointed Chair of Capacitybuilders, said:
“I am delighted with the composition of the new Board. The calibre of candidates for the new positions was outstanding and I know that, between us, we will be able to make a real difference in the support provided to the third sector.”
The new appointments to Capacitybuilders' board are:

Sir Rodney Brooke CBE, Chair of the General Social Care Council and Board Member of the National Information Governance Board for Health and Social Care Records. He is also trustee of four charities and has chaired various bodies, including the Greater London Grants Commission on Governance in the Third Sector.

Stephen Dunmore, Consultant, Chair of National Family Mediation, Chair of the BBC's Charity Appeals Advisory Committee, Board Member of the Third Sector Advisory Body and former Chief Executive of the Big Lottery Fund.

Anthony Freeling, Trustee of UnLtd – the Foundation for Social Entrepreneurs – serving as Chair of its Ventures Committee, Council Member of the Open University and Director of Ashridge Strategic Management Centre.

Olu Olasode, Founder and Chief Executive Officer of TL First, Chair of Audit and Commissioner of the Social Care Inspection Commission, and a trustee of the Community Action Network.

Angela Sarkis CBE, Vice President of the African and Caribbean Evangelical Alliance, a Member of the House of Lords Appointments Commission and a member of The Portman Group Independent Complaints Panel.
Reappointments to Capacitybuilders' board are:

Chris Pond, Director of Financial Capability at the Financial Services Authority and former Chief Executive of the National Council of One Parent Families. He was Member of Parliament for Gravesham and Parliamentary Under Secretary of State at the Department for Work and Pensions.

Caryl Agard OBE, Executive Director of The Social Business Company and Chair of Voice4Change England, with a 20-year background in social and economic development. In the past, Caryl has served as a member of the national Compact working group and was Chair of the BME sub group for the Compact. He was also an independent director on the board of Futurebuilders England Ltd.

Margaret Bolton, freelance consultant with senior management experience in policy and research roles and 20 years' experience of working in or with voluntary organisations.

Julia Kaufmann OBE, freelance consultant with small, voluntary organisations, specialising in governance, strategic planning and project development since 2000; trustee of the EDF Energy Trust and a member of the Charities Aid Foundation Grants Advisory Council.

Sir Roger Singleton CBE, Chair of the Independent Safeguarding Authority, with 20 years' experience at governance level as Trustee, Chair and Treasurer of the National Council of Voluntary Child Care Organisations.
The appointments will be until March 2011. The Chair's remuneration is £18,000 a year. The board member positions have a remuneration of £300 a day for up to 30 days per year. These appointments have been made in accordance with the OCPA Code of Practice. All appointments are made on merit and political activity plays no part in the selection process. However, in accordance with the original Nolan recommendations, there is a requirement for appointees' political activity (if declared) to be made public. Chris Pond has declared previous political activity with the Labour Party. No other appointee declared political activity.
