Phil Hope attends launch of the UK Catalyst Awards - the Community Awards for Social Technology
09 May 2008
Phil Hope, Minister for the Third Sector helped to formally launch the UK Catalyst Awards on 8 May, following the Prime Minister’s announcement in July 2007 that the Government would support a new awards scheme to recognise ways of utilising existing and widely-owned technology for social ends.
The Community Awards for Social Technology will reward inspiring stories of people who have helped their communities by using social technology in new and exciting ways. Social technology includes any internet, mobile or gaming software that lets people connect and communicate with others. The awards aim to see and celebrate where these opportunities for connection are being utilised for social benefit. The awards are open for applications in a number of categories with a closing date of 16th June. Following short listing and a pitching event, the final awards ceremony will be held on the 24th July..
Speaking at the launch event, Phil Hope, Minister for the Third Sector, said:
“The Government recognises that the social change agenda needs to go beyond the traditional and embrace new and diverse ways in which organisations and communities can come together to make a difference. That is why the Government is supporting the Catalyst awards - which provide an opportunity to show case, publicise and reward the ways in which social technology can be put to good use - through enabling people to connect with each other for social good."
