Prime Minister launches the Council on Social Action
11 December 2007
The Prime Minister today launched the Council on Social Action at its
inaugural meeting at 10 Downing Street.
He welcomed the Council’s newly appointed membership and invited them to
begin the important work of advising the Government and other stakeholders
on new ways to catalyse social action, and ways to celebrate, connect and
empower all those working for social good.
The Prime Minister asked the Council to focus, as its first key challenge,
on the theme of one to one – the power of the one-to-one approach to
helping and supporting people – whether though mentoring, coaching,
buddying, tutoring, counselling or being a good neighbour. He asked the
Council to explore what it could do to expand awareness of the power of
this approach, and expand the numbers of people having the opportunity to
give and receive support in this way.
In addition to one to one, the Council also discussed:
-
The role of the Council and its Year 1 objectives
-
Update on progress made on other social change initiatives announced in
July
-
The concept of 24/7 and the possibility of developing a social
action day
