Budding entrepreneurs make 60-second pitches for social change

8 November 2007

A competition challenging young people to come up with enterprising ideas to change society was launched today on the social networking site Bebo.

Make Your Mark in 60 Seconds features four films of budding social entrepreneurs presenting their ideas for social and environmental change. The films show young people making their 60-second pitches to a celebrity panel including Glastonbury Festival’s Emily Eavis, Peter Jones of ‘Dragon’s Den’ and ‘Apprentice’ winner Tim Campbell.

The pitches, and the verdicts of the celebrity judges, are available on the Bebo and Make Your Mark websites, where you can watch the videos and vote for your favourite idea. The winner will be announced by Minister for the Third Sector Phil Hope and Competitiveness Minister Stephen Timms on Social Enterprise Day, 15 November 2007.

If you are aged between 11 and 30, you can also submit your own idea for social change in a 60-second video pitch using an online toolkit. If you enter you could win up to £5,000 and coaching from UnLtd, the charity which supports social entrepreneurs, to realise the idea.

Make Your Mark in 60 Seconds is part of a year-round campaign to inspire young people to use their enterprising ideas for social and environmental change called Make Your Mark: Change Lives, led by Enterprise Insight, the Social Enterprise Coalition and the Office of the Third Sector with UnLtd, ?What If! and Bebo.

Phil Hope, Minister for the Third Sector, said:

“Social enterprise is an exciting way for young people to make a real difference and find innovative solutions to social and environmental issues.”

The online competition closes on 8 February 2008 and the winner will be announced at Young Voice, the Social Enterprise Coalition’s annual conference for young social entrepreneurs, on 26 February 2008.
