Charity Commission
Within the Office of the Third Sector we support ministers in relation to
their functions in respect of the Charity Commission. The Charity
Commission is the independent regulator of charities in England and Wales.
It is a non–ministerial government department, which means that it is not
part of the Cabinet Office and is not subject to the direction or control
of Ministers. However Cabinet Office ministers have some functions in
relation to the Charity Commission, including:
-
appointing the Charity Commission Board Members, after a fair and open
competition
-
replying to questions in Parliament about the Commission
-
making orders to give effect to changes in charities' constitutions
which are regulated by Acts of Parliament and have been agreed by the
Commission.
You can find out more about the Charity Commission's role as the
regulator of charities in England and Wales on the Charity Commission's
website [External website].
Dame Suzi Leather DBE is the Chair of the Charity Commission.
