Commission for the Compact
The Commission for the Compact officially launched its policy work
programme and business plan in April 2007. The Commissioner and their team
are taking this work forward in consultation with the voluntary and
community sector and the Government.
The first Commissioner for the Compact, John Stoker, was appointed through
a joint process between Government ministers and third sector stakeholders,
and took up office in October 2006.
In September 2007 John Stoker announced that for personal reasons
he was stepping down as Commissioner for the Compact. He was
succeeded, as interim Commissioner pending public competition, by Helen
Baker, who is a non-executive Director of the Commission. Sir Bert Massie
has now been appointed as the new Commissioner for the COmpact with effect
from April 2008.
The Commission’s aim is to strengthen partnership working between public
sector bodies and voluntary and community or third sector organisations
through the operation of the Compact. In summary the Commission's
role is to:
-
Increase awareness and understanding of the Compact in both public and
third sector bodies
-
Promote greater use of the Compact
-
Collect and publish evidence of the benefits of the Compact
-
Identify examples of good and bad practice in Compact working
-
Ensure that the Compact keeps up to date with relevant changes in
legislation and policy
The Office of the Third Sector is the sponsorship manager of the Commission
for the Compact, ensuring that the Commission and government work closely
together on Compact issues. Together, the Office of the Third Sector, the
Commission for the Compact and Compact Voice (representing the sector)
oversee the Compact at the centre and have complementary roles.
