Families At Risk Review will identify barriers to tackling exclusion
A review aimed at finding ways to break through barriers in offering whole family support mechanisms began with a consultation event in Brighton. New data from the Social Exclusion Task Force reveals the challenges in reaching families at risk of social exclusion. It demonstrates that a family with 5 or more risk indicators could suffer permanent exclusion if they are not targeted at ‘critical moments
’, such as a parent suffering mental illness, a child in trouble at school or a family member being sent to prison.
The review will look look at how to reach vulnerable families experiencing multiple problems, analysis of the types of issues they face, identifying the role of public services integrating adult and child services better and looking at the role of parents and parenting help – particularly for fathers.
Key questions for the review are:
- How effective are adult services in recognising the parent role of their clients?
- How well do services recognise and respond to the specific needs of fathers?
- How efficiently does information flow from adult services to other professionals working with the family, including teachers and health visitors?
