The UK government recently considered its policy on pre-release access to official statistics, which came into force on 1 December 2008. After careful consideration, government has decided to maintain the existing time period of 24 hours. The review announced by the previous Government, was to assess the new arrangements of 24 hours (from up to 5 days previously) 12 months after they had been in force. The review identified that further tightening of the rules on pre-release access is very likely to impact on government’s ability to be properly accountable to the public. This report provides further details of the review and its findings.
