The Cabinet Office published its Efficiency Technical Note (ETN), a requirement of the Spending Review White Paper 2004 in October 2004. The Spending Review aims to achieve £20 billion of savings a year by 2007–08 through increasing efficiency across government.
The Cabinet Secretary has recently set out a vision for a Better Cabinet Office that is more strategic and better focused on its core objectives. The Cabinet Office has a number of projects underway, which are an important contributor to achieving that vision and will enable the Department to deliver its efficiency and relocation targets. But the Department wants to go further. Through the current business planning round, all units are being asked to consider what activities they should do and how they should do them, in order to achieve the vision of being more strategic and focused. The full outcomes will not be known until the New Year.
As a result, the Cabinet Office will not be publishing a renewed Efficiency Technical Note at the same time as other departments but will do so as soon as the position is clear.
