The new Permanent Secretary of the Cabinet Office, Richard Heaton, takes up his new role today.
Appointed to the role following approval from the Prime Minister, the Deputy Prime Minister and the Minister for the Cabinet Office, Richard was an existing Permanent Secretary in the Cabinet Office and takes on this role alongside his responsibilities as First Parliamentary Counsel.
Richard joined the Cabinet Office in February and was previously the Director General for Pensions and Transformation at the Department for Work and Pensions. Prior to that, he was the senior lawyer at DWP, Department for Health and the Ministry of Justice.
Welcoming the new Permanent Secretary, Minister for the Cabinet Office Francis Maude said:
As the new Permanent Secretary of the Cabinet Office, Richard will be strongly involved in implementing the Civil Service Reform programme as well as in developing its next steps. He will also oversee the Efficiency and Reform agenda as well as serving as Accounting Officer for the entire Department. I’m pleased to welcome him to this important role.
Richard is already a Permanent Secretary who will take on these responsibilities alongside his existing position. We said in the Civil Service Reform plan that we would look at sharing executive functions and that is just what we are doing here.
