External assessment scoring system

If you apply for external assessment the assessor will use a standard system for judging your application based on documentary evidence, observations and discussions. This involves scoring the elements of each criterion on a four-band scale of compliance and demonstrating that you meet the required levels. This is not something you need to understand before making an assessment as it will be explained by the assessor, but for those who wish to know the basis in advance, it is set out below.

Best Practice - all aspects of the element are met, and the applicant can demonstrate that they have gone beyond the requirements

Full Compliance - all aspects of the element are met

Partial Compliance - some but not all aspects of the element are met and remedial action to meet the remainder could be put in place within a short period of time (maximum of three months)

Major non-compliance - none of the requirements of the element are met, or the assessor concludes that remedial action to address those elements that are not met would require a time scale in excess of three months.

To achieve the Charter Mark Standard, applicants must demonstrate at least 70% implementation of the elements in each of the Criteria.

No major non-compliances are allowed in any of the six Criteria.

This means that the maximum number of partial compliances for each criterion will be as set out in the following table:
