How can we learn from feedback?

Parents have a say in school life

Sir Francis Hill Community Primary School recognise that parents are an important group among their service users and want them to have a say. The school actively invite feedback and have developed a questionnaire, which goes out with the annual report to all parents at the end of the school year in July.

The questionnaire invites parents to give their satisfaction rating for important aspects of school life, and to add their comments on any issue that matters to them. A parents' committee then analyses the results over the summer, highlights any issues, which need action or a response, and then publicises the results through the school newsletter.

An example of changes the school has brought in as a result is the early publication of key dates to allow parents, especially working parents, to plan ahead. 'Most of the feedback is very positive,' says Headteacher Derek Anderson. 'But in our last survey, out of 200 replies, there was a dozen saying they would like more notice of sports days, parents' evening and so on. We now publish key dates for the whole school year. This was one issue that was highlighted through the consultation process and which we responded to.'

The school also conducts one-off surveys, for example to tackle problems with parking outside school, which led to a new cycle track up to the school entrances and an educational campaign to encourage people to walk or cycle.

Listening to patients and reacting

Performance and user satisfaction levels are monitored regularly by Dr Kenyon and Partners, and patient questionnaires play an important part in this process. The Patients' Participation Panel is involved in conducting surveys of patients, this brings an element of independence to the survey methodology.

Examples of remedial action include: changes to the open surgery arrangements, giving priority to young children and a plan to provide activity tables for children to replace the selection of children's toys laying on the floor. The surgery receives many letters and other expressions of appreciation for the service reflecting the high levels of satisfaction amongst patients.
